ScaleMP, a leader in virtualization solutions for high-end computing, has announced that vSMP Foundation Standalone, its patent-pending virtualization software, is now available for the IBM BladeCenter HS21 XM blade server and the IBM iDataPlex System.

In conjunction with IBM BladeCenter H, ScaleMP enables the aggregation of up to 14 dual-processor blades within an integrated chassis to create a single virtual symmetric multiprocessor (SMP).  Customers are now able to aggregate up to 112 Intel Xeon processing cores and up to 448 GB of shared memory, benefiting from one of the densest high-end x86 systems available on the market today.

"I am pleased to announce the support of vSMP Foundation Standalone for the IBM BladeCenter system, proving once more our solution's flexibility and further enhancing its value to high performance computing (HPC) customers," said Shai Fultheim, founder and CEO of ScaleMP. "vSMP Foundation Standalone enables the creation of a cost-effective, high-performance system that is ideally suited for scalable environments across many industry segments such as financial services, manufacturing, life sciences and energy. Our solution reduces the operational cost and complexity normally associated with traditional cluster and grid deployments. By reducing the number of managed nodes while taking advantage of enhanced performance and a much larger memory footprint, customers are now able to run large memory jobs, as well as significantly reduce their total cost of ownership (TCO)."

Solutions based on vSMP Foundation Standalone deliver better performance for HPC applications compared to traditional SMP systems, while remaining comparable in per-socket price to managed clusters, the company says. ScaleMP's vSMP Foundation Standalone aggregation platform provides end customers with numerous benefits such as:

·        Large memory resource with up to 1TB of memory

·        High core-count x86 shared-memory resource: up to 128 cores coupled with high memory bandwidth

·        Ease of use and lowest TCO for HPC applications by aggregating multiple cluster nodes into a single system

The IBM BladeCenter H offers up to 14 blades in a compact 9U chassis, and comes with an integrated InfiniBand switch, and up to four hot swappable, redundant, load-balancing power supplies. Power, cooling, and networking devices are aggregated in the rear of the chassis, optimizing space and power. Customer's investment is protected since each blade module is fully upgradeable in the future to newer CPUs, as they become available. Customers can start small and scale over time as their needs grow.

The IBM BladeCenter HS21 XM delivers two high-performance Dual-Core or Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors coupled with up to 32 GB maximum memory per blade.  It supports multiple I/O expansion capabilities, as well as local drives.

Support for IBM iDataPlex

ScaleMP also announced recently that vSMP Foundation Standalone is available for the IBM iDataPlex system. vSMP Foundation Standalone software uses two quad- or dual-core dual-socket Intel Xeon processor-based systems connected through InfiniBand to create a four-socket platform with 128 GB of shared memory that is ideal for high performance computing (HPC), the company says.

"With our innovative iDataPlex system design, customers realize significant savings on power and cooling, as well as space," said Jim Gargan, vice president, IBM Systems and Technology Group. "vSMP Foundation Standalone in conjunction with the new iDataPlex DX360 high performance server based on the latest in quad-core processing capabilities from Intel, doubles the memory size available for processing and reduces the number of operating systems installed per rack by 50 percent," he said.

"I am pleased to announce the support of vSMP Foundation Standalone for the IBM iDataPlex system, further enhancing its cost-efficiencies," said Fultheim. "vSMP Foundation Standalone is addressing a real pain point for HPC customers where high performance comes with a high price. Our solution reduces the operational cost and complexity normally associated with traditional cluster and grid deployments. By reducing the number of managed nodes by a factor of two, while offering enhanced performance and double the memory footprint, customers will be able to run large memory jobs, as well as reduce their total cost of ownership (TCO)."
