Practical Linux: Using PDT to Manage Linux
Eclipse provides many pre-configured IDEs, and PDT is perfect for managing Linux.
By Joe Pluta
This is the second in an ongoing series of articles meant to help you create a virtual Linux environment right on your desktop or laptop. As I noted in the first article in the series, I built this series on a set of fantastic video tutorials by Catherine Gaughan-Smith (aka CGS), which can all be found here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4. This article, though, is a complete departure from that curriculum. CGS uses ssh from her Mac desktop to access the virtual machine, but I’m going to show you how to use Eclipse—and more specifically, the Eclipse PHP Development Tools (PDT)—to access your shiny new virtual machine.

RPG Academy - Modernization: Guidelines for Modernization Goals, Part 3
Here’s the final “R” of the quartet I’ve been discussing: Refactoring and its proposition is so obvious that we usually forget about it. Note that I said obvious, not easy. Keep reading to figure out what I mean.
By Rafael Victória-Pereira
Finally, let’s discuss the final R of the Modernizing IBM i Applications from the Database up to the User Interface and Everything in Between IBM Redbook modernization goals: refactoring.
“Do No Harm”
Refactoring is a variation of reengineering: in this approach, the application’s code is improved in such a way that the functionality and interfaces with other applications are not affected. In other words (the words of Hippocrates), “do no harm” is also refactoring’s philosophy. To make sure that you really did no harm to the application or its operating context, extensive testing is required. Because tests, particularly of the magnitude required here, are very time-consuming, they should be as automated as possible. If your modernization process also included a UI modernization, there are many tools that can easily map and thoroughly test the interaction flow. There are also tools that can…
What to Do When Your AS/400 Talent Retires

This guide offers strategies and software suggestions to help you plan IT staffing and resources and smooth the transition after your AS/400 talent retires. Read on to learn:
- Why IBM i skills depletion is a top concern

2019 State of IBM i Modernization
The annual Profound Logic ‘State of IBM i Modernization Survey” takes a look at the trends and attitudes that shape the IBM i modernization market. We reached out to the IBM i community, and the response was outstanding: close to 800 people, nearly 300 more than last year, took the survey. This enthusiasm resulted in very interesting findings for how businesses plan to use and modernize the platform in the coming year.
As you read through each section of the survey, you will see our summary of the results and suggestions for the future. We hope the survey will help your business better understand what is possible for your IBM i platform in the coming year.

What Most IBM i Shops Get Wrong About the IFS
Can you trust all of your users all of the time?
A typical end user receives 16 malicious emails each month, but only 17 percent of these phishing campaigns are reported to IT. Once an attack is underway, most organizations won’t discover the breach until six month later.
A staggering amount of damage can occur in that time. Despite these risks, 93 percent of organizations are leaving their IBM i systems vulnerable to cybercrime. In this on-demand webinar, IBM i security experts Robin Tatam and Sandi Moore will reveal:
- How phishing attacks are becoming more sophisticated
- Three little-known ways malicious programs can reach your IFS
- Why the IFS is IBM i’s “Typhoid Mary”
You’ll also learn why some of the most common malware solutions still leave IBM i systems vulnerable—and what you can do to protect your organization.
