IBM Notes and Domino 9 Social Edition was released on March 21, 2013. While there are many features to cover on the IBM Domino 9 server, for the purpose of this article, I'll be focusing entirely on the very attractive Notes 9 client.

About 18 months ago, I wrote about the then-current IBM Lotus Notes 8.5.2 and gave an overview of some other IBM Collaboration Solutions products like IBM Connections, Lotus Quickr, and IBM Sametime. While Lotus Notes 8.5.3 has been available for almost a year now, there are many functions that you may not be aware exist.
Don't just build a Domino server on IBM i. Build two or three Domino servers and cluster them!

Have you ever seen the Mel Brooks comedy Spaceballs? There's a scene where Dark Helmet and Colonel Sandurz (played by Rick Moranis and George Wyner, respectively) take their spaceship called Spaceball One through light speed all the way up to "ludicrous speed." In the world of performance computing and platform-specific features, running Domino on any other platform than IBM i would be the equivalent to light speed. As Dark Helmet says, "No. No. No. Light speed is too slow!"

IBM is aggressively moving forward with its Lotus-based social networking and collaboration offerings, but it seems the company continues to ignore hundreds of thousands of IBM i customers it apparently believes are fat, dumb, and happy using yesterday's legacy Lotus Notes and Domino solutions.

Lotus Domino Server—it's just an email server, so let's move on.... Just kidding!
