Sending Error Messages to Java

I have a program on the 400 that sends diagnostic error messages up the stak to the caller so that the caller can display or handle the errors. Is there any way to get these messages in Java? I am using PCML to call the rpg program that sends te messages. I use the getMessageList call but no messages are returned. Thanks
