Create a spool file. 2. Print it to a laser printer. 3. Convert it to a PDF file. Bill

Creating a PDF from a spooled file and direct it to a printer

The PDF is what needs to be printed on the laser. We are having trouble with an overlay. The print file is an order that goes edge to edge on the paper. It will act differently with different printers that we have scattered all over the country sometimes cutting off part of the data. The only time it seems to print like we want is if we convert it into PDF and then print it to a laser printer. Thanks for the prompt reply...

Here's my hypothesis as to why you can't do it: It's probably a problem because you are not involving a program to print the PDF. I believe that what you are trying to do is the same thing as sending a spreadsheet to a printer and wondering why it doesn't print. A program has to be involved in the translation of the file into instructions that printer understands. So, the only way to do what you want is to find a PDF printing program that allows the specification of the file to be printed and the printer to be printed upon. Bill

We need to do the following: ================================================== ==================== 1. Create a spool file 2. Convert the spool file to a PDF 3. Have the converted PDF automatically be directed to a laser printer ================================================== ==================== We can do the first two steps ok. It is step three that is killing us. We are using the SPLCONVERT command from Gumbo's SPLAMATIC software. We just need to direct it to a printer instead of a path. Thanks in advance...

The easiest way to do the job is to install and use IBM's Licensed Program "InfoPrint Server" (5722IP1). You have to install PSF too (option 36-38 of 5722SS1). After the installation, you have to define a PSF Configuration object and a virtual LAN & AFP printer. The *PSFCFG object allow you to transform any spool file to PDF, just by moving it to the OUTQ of the printer you created. The *PSFCFG, gives you some choices wher the PDF will be created, and one of them is an *OUTQ. To be more specific, read the manual of the product or the "Print VI" red book or ask your local IBM support team. Yossi
