AS400 job? Sounds like they want it all

Sounds like they want a programmer/analyst/EDI specialist/network engineer/desktop support/operator/help desk/project manager. This is an admin job, there is no programming mentioned. This is typical of an across the board admin job. This was my job description for a year for a division of a Fortune 500. I didn't even have a chance to program. All I could do was pass on direction to programmers at corporate and consulting companies / vendors involved with the ERP systems running. Sole manager / admin work tends toward the hardware side rather than software. It's not my preference, but it's what was needed for that division running up Y2K ERP replacement and readiness testing. You literally end up knowing a lot about everything or you quickly become overwhelmed, and meantime operations and requirements never cease. Things like networking in multiple locations and reconfiguring MAPICS to handle it are some of the things that you don't experience as a programmer. I got them through the crunch, but I'm a programmer. The job description will be filled by someone who would rather not be. rd

AS400 job? Sounds like they want it all

Here's an IT manager position in an AS400 shop. Sounds like the "Manager" will be doing everything.... Job activities include: Server Support Troubleshooting for users EDI transaction support Backups System and network monitoring Server and desktop patching and upgrades Determine and implement projects for future improvements, growth and system stability Sounds like they want a programmer/analyst/EDI specialist/network engineer/desktop support/operator/help desk/project manager. Sadly, this is the state of many of the AS400 jobs that I see posted: management or programming. I personally don't know of anyone who has all of these skills. Nor would I take this job even if I had all of these skills. Even at twice the pay I'm making now. Reason: I'd spend my entire life at the company, and be on-call for what little I was away. Can you say living hell? (The opinions stated in this post are my own, and are not necessarily shared by anyone living or dead, overworked, underpaid, or in any way too stressed out by having a job like the one mentioned above)
