I think save/restore only works to N-2 releases; a V5R3 savefile can be used as far back as V5R1, using the TGTRLS parm on your SAVxxx command. V4R5 is likely not supported.

Different versions, save and restore

Our production machine is an iseries 270 on V5R3. We have an iseries 170 at V4R5 that we use for development. We would like for the 170 to function as a backup server in the event of a problem with our 270. The problem arises when I create a save file on V5R3, then transfer it to V4R5, I cannot access it. How do I get my data files from the V5R3 box down to the V4R5 box?

There is no way to do that other than upgrade your backup machine where you cant save data by target release older than 2 previous versions
