I suspect the contents of &IDATEC are not valid for decimal fields. Have you dumped the program to check its value? If &IDATEC is being passed as a parameter, make sure that the caller is defining it as packed. A common mistake is to pass a variable that is defined as a subfield in a data structure - which default to zoned decimal unless you force them to be packed. Hope this helps, Kevin

&idatec is defined as a 10 byte char. &idate is a 7,0 decimal that is passed into the CL from a command. I am trying to move &idate (1234567) to &idatec ('1234567'). Basically, I want the CHGVAR to act like an RPG MOVE command. Any ideas?

Try defining the input var as dec(15 5)and use debug to verify the contents.

I am having trouble converting a decimal to its string equivalent. Here is a part of the CL that is giving me the problem. Why do I get a data decimal error on the CHGVAR command????? you can still convert the decimal to character by passing hex equivalent from command line. The problem is due to packed decimal data type. It takes default size of 15,5 and in AS400 we pass the value by reference and not by value. Decimal data error is because of memory space. You have defined &IDATE as *dec 7,0. You need to pass X'1234567F' from the command line. When you look at the value in &IDATE it's 1234567 and when it's converted to char, the value is '0001234567'. You can also use the second method of defining the variable &IDATE as *DEC 15,5 and then converting it to *DEC 7,0. After this move the decimal value to character.
