  • Access IFS through ISP?

Hello all. If one has access to an AS/400 via the internet (not intranet), and dials up through an ISP, is there a way one can browse, move, create objects in the IFS on the AS/400? I have heard that you needed CA to do this before V4R2, but I've only dealt with intranets. I'd like to be able to browse the IFS with Windows explorer through the network neighborhood. Thanks. Access IFS through ISP?

Hi, Bradley. I hope you had an enjoyable holiday! As far as your question goes, I have worked with three different Windows-to-AS/400 connection clients within the past four years, and the only one I've ever seen that allows you to assign a drive letter to the AS/400 IFS is CA/400. I hope someone will come along and call me a liar, because I would love to know if there is another way to do this.

Michael, If you're on AS/400 V4R2 or above, you can use AS/400 NetServer to map a drive to the AS/400 IFS. NetServer is a free server that's now being included with OS/400 that allows you to share As/400 files with Windows desktops using Windows Server Message Block protocol. IBM thinks it works so well that they are no longer providing network drives with the new Express client product, instead relying on people learning how to set up and use the AS/400 NetServer to provide those functions. I've tried it and it's fairly easy to set up and use. If you want to learn about NetServer, go to IBM's NetServer web page at www.as400.ibm.com/netserver. That should give you some ideas on how to get started. Joe Hertvik Editor-AS/400 Network Expert (formerly Client Access/400 Expert) hertvik@midrangecomputing.com www.midrangecomputing.com/cae Joe, Thanks for the info! Since we just upgraded to a new 620 model AS/400 running V4R2 this past weekend, your post could not have come at a more timely moment. I'll spend some time this week at the NetServer site. Thanks again,Michael
