At our company we have a POP3 server running on an Ethernet network. Our AS400 is also on the Ethernet network and can see the POP3 server (POP3 is both in front of and behind the firewall, AS400 behind the firewall). What I would like to do is to allow my 5250 users to retrieve their E-Mail from the POP3 server. I can do using the TELNET client and telneting to the POP3 port, but this is very clunky and not very user friendly. We are using Deskmaster and they have a version that uses internet mail, but it used Distribution Queues, and from my discussusion with them doesn't quite do what I want. I looked at the TELNET client hopiong I could redirect the input/output, but it seems that is not possible. I looked at programming a TCP E-Mail client but we only have RPG and it seems that the API's require C or Pascal. I guess my question is three fold: 1. Is there anyway to redirect the TELNET client's input and output? 2. Is there anyway to program the TCP/IP socket APIs in RPG? 3. Is there any POP3 E-Mail client already available for the AS400 so I don' thave to reinvent the wheel? Any help would be much appreciated. Jim Langston

Hi Jamie - I couldn't tell if your users are on PCs or dumb terminals. If your users have PCs, you can setup Microsoft Outlook Express very easily as your POP3 clients on each PC and they should be able to communicate directly with your email server. Outlook Express is free and distributed with Explorer. I hope this helps! JCComment

Site address is: http://www.as400.ibm.com/tstudio/ebizness/index_eb.htm ) On that site, IBM says this: "...Your AS/400 comes with basically everything you need for an internal e-mail system. What it does not come with, namely a client-side e-mail program such as Netscape Mail** or Eudora**, is available from software providers." So my guess is that, no, you won't be able to find a native POP3 email client for the AS/400. IBM seems to have set up TCP/IP functionality so that it functions as an ISP in regards to email, not as a native client. As such, it doesn't contain a native POP3 client for the green screen. ***To any IBMers reading this. Is this a correct deduction or is there a way around this so that Jim's people can receive email on the green screen. Have there been any enhancements to provide this capability since that tutorial was written? Please feel free to join in this discussion. Ahh, thank you, that is exactly what I wanted! It is a POP3 and SMTP client for the AS400 that will connect to my existing POP3 server through the ethernet. It's a little pricey, but then isn't everything for the AS400? I'll see if I can't get the budgeting to purchase it. This will work great in our corporation.
