  • Use Existing Twinax

We are in the process converting our PCs from emulation w/twinax to ethernet via cat 5. We have an office approximately 1 block away to which we have run about 1700 feet of twinax. This setup has worked fine but limits the number of devices in that office. Also there is a network of 7 PCs in the office of whick one is attached via 5250 emulation. Is there a way to utilize the single twinax cable already in place with an ethernet connection and/or allow all seven PCs in the network access to the AS400 without using an address for each. AS400 is a 170e V4R3.

Chip, I believe the limit for CAT5 is 300 feet, so that is out. You could continue to use the twinax and put something like a 5494 machine at the other end, but I think that would be the last resort. I think that your 2 best options at this point are: 1. Fiber optic line. If you can get this run between the two points, this would be the best solution. 2. Radio-frequency. This would be the easiest solution. Bill
