  • SLIP Dialup from W95 ok, W98 no go

    I have a PC that I migrated to Windows 98 (the most current version, allowing the install wizard to take all defaults) and when I dial up to the AS/400 (V4R4) on a SLIP Async connection, I can connect briefly but the AS/400 disconnects me. Did something change with Windows 98? I think the PC is sending something to the AS/400 that causes a disconnect. Other W95 PCs still connect fine and this one worked before the migration. I can't find anything useful in the sysop messages or qhst log. Here's a log from the PC side: 04-20-2001 05:56:08.86 - SMART Rapid Transit K56 in use. 04-20-2001 05:56:08.89 - Modem type: SMART Rapid Transit K56 04-20-2001 05:56:08.89 - Modem inf path: LTMODEM.INF 04-20-2001 05:56:08.89 - Modem inf section: Modem_PNP_DSVD 04-20-2001 05:56:09.23 - 115200,N,8,1 04-20-2001 05:56:09.23 - 9600,N,8,1 04-20-2001 05:56:09.23 - Initializing modem. 04-20-2001 05:56:09.23 - Send: AT 04-20-2001 05:56:09.24 - Recv: AT 04-20-2001 05:56:09.24 - Recv: OK 04-20-2001 05:56:09.24 - Interpreted response: Ok 04-20-2001 05:56:09.24 - Send: AT &F E0 &C1 &D2 V1 S0=0V1 04-20-2001 05:56:09.24 - Recv: AT &F E0 &C1 &D2 V1 S0=0V1 04-20-2001 05:56:09.24 - Recv: OK 04-20-2001 05:56:09.24 - Interpreted response: Ok 04-20-2001 05:56:09.24 - Send: ATS7=120S30=30L0M1N3%C1&K3B0B15X4 04-20-2001 05:56:09.25 - Recv: OK 04-20-2001 05:56:09.25 - Interpreted response: Ok 04-20-2001 05:56:09.25 - Dialing. 04-20-2001 05:56:09.25 - Send: ATDT; 04-20-2001 05:56:12.07 - Recv: OK 04-20-2001 05:56:12.07 - Interpreted response: Ok 04-20-2001 05:56:12.07 - Dialing. 04-20-2001 05:56:12.07 - Send: ATDT*##,####### 04-20-2001 05:56:41.17 - Recv: CONNECT 9600 MNP5 04-20-2001 05:56:41.17 - Interpreted response: Connect 04-20-2001 05:56:41.17 - Connection established at 9600bps. 04-20-2001 05:56:41.17 - Error-control on. 04-20-2001 05:56:41.17 - Data compression on. 04-20-2001 05:57:20.33 - Remote modem hung up. 04-20-2001 05:57:20.33 - Recv: NO CARRIER 04-20-2001 05:57:20.33 - Interpreted response: No Answer 04-20-2001 05:57:20.35 - Hanging up the modem. 04-20-2001 05:57:20.35 - Send: ATH E1 04-20-2001 05:57:20.35 - Recv: OK 04-20-2001 05:57:20.35 - Interpreted response: Ok 04-20-2001 05:57:20.35 - 9600,N,8,1 04-20-2001 05:57:21.38 - Session Statistics: 04-20-2001 05:57:21.38 - Reads : 115 bytes 04-20-2001 05:57:21.38 - Writes: 205 bytes 04-20-2001 05:57:21.38 - SMART Rapid Transit K56 closed. David, I don't know if this applies to slip, I have always used PPP. In your TCP/IP setup, you have several options for authentication. I believe that one is chap, you might check that it is the same as your w95 setup. You might also look into setting up a PPP connection instead. David Morris
