You must use Webshpere, if you are going to use Host Publisher on the 400, not Host-on-Demand. Dave Sorry, you're right, Dave. The $450 per seat and requirement for the $7,500 Websphere Advanced is for the Websphere Host Integration Solution consisting of Host On Demand and Host Publisher. Host On Demand alone is only $219 per seat and has some kind of Websphere family server included that runs on any system. Doesn't come out and call it anything in particular, including Websphere Standard. On the other hand, Host On Demand is just a Java 5250 emulator. My remarks yesterday need to be amended to say that IBM is tying their future to Websphere Host Integration and the Websphere Advanced web server, but that you can still do 5250 in Java from them for a couple hundred per user with server included. Thanks for straightening me out on that, Dave. Ralph ralph@ee.net

Ralph Daugherty wrote: Host On Demand is just a Java 5250 emulator Yes it is a JAVA 5250 emulator, but it the product is not just a 5250 emulator. The base HOD package also comes with its own set of file transfer programs, as well as DATABASE-ON-DEMAND extentions. Included, too, is a 3812 print emulator. Considering the emulation occurs "Through the browser", this is a fantastic advancement for reaching remote sites, and giving remote access to AS/400 apps. HOD also provides a full set of SSL utilities for more secure access to the outside world. In addition HOD comes with a set of "JAVA beans" if you're so inclined to use them. A default GUI is provided, but this can be enhanced with the add-on CUSTOMIZER product. CUSTOMIZER can not only change the look and feel of your screens, but add graphical objects as well. No changes to your HLL programs are necessary. HOST PUBLISHER takes the CUSTOMIZER concept several stages forward. With Host Publisher, your screens now appear as any other web page. The transformation is so complete, that I would wager that you could not decipher a 5250 screen, from a web page created using any other method. This comes with a hefty price tag, WEBSPHERE is required, and there is more development time needed. Dave

Dave Abromowitz wrote: "The base HOD package also comes with its own set of file transfer programs..." This is a very good thing. I know of a large sale that didn't go through for Strategi because the file transfer capability such as HOD has wasn't there. It looks like version 5 of IBM's Host On Demand is a real cost-performance winner for the AS/400, especially since it now supports subfiles as well as all the other features you pointed out. Thanks for the info. Ralph ralph@ee.net

See how some of the brightest minds using the box agree on the right direction but somehow IBM, (like Dave puts it) ties an arm behind our back. This is good stuff. We must drive these points home to IBM until they understand or say no. If they say no I will call it a day and put all my efforts into something else and then my mindset will be anything BUT IBM because they gave up on good people and technology to take the easy way out. (The path of least resistance)

(The path of least resistance) You lost me here, KCM. Looks to me like IBM is one of the last proprietary holdouts. I can remember when Sperry went to UNIX in the early 80's. The last I heard, 5% or less of Data General's revenue was coming from AOS. I think DG had joined the NT bandwagon. I always liked VMS, but I don't hear much about it any more since Compaq bought DEC. Maybe I'm missing the point, but I guess I'm wondering where you're going to go that isn't already in the UNIX or NT camp. (I'm not fussing, just curious.)

Ted, How did you embed that .gif in your response? And how do you change the font and color of the text? I tried changing the font in Word, but then when I paste it back into here my changes get lost and everything becomes courier font again.

Ted, How did you embed that .gif in your response? Rats, Susan! You're making me divulge all my secrets! SRC="http://home.earthlink.net/~tmeinen/faces/lol.gif" ALT="laugh" WIDTH="15" HEIGHT="15"> The links for those gifs are at href="http://home.earthlink.net/~tmeinen/faces/"> http://home.earthlink.net/~tmeinen/faces/. And how do you change the font and color of the text? Enclose your HTML in brackets. (On my PC keyboard, they're to the right of the P key, without holding down shift.) If you'd like, email me at href="mailto:tholt@midrangecomputing.com">tholt@midrangecomputing.com and I'll send you a text file with sample HTML you can use. (That offer's good for anybody.)

Gene said: Run for Congress, Ted!! Thanks, Gene, but it would never work. I live in a state where the major source of income is transfer payments. I would get letters like the following from my constituents: Dear Mr. Holt: We want to put a Monument to Chitterlings on the courthouse square of our town, but we don't want to spend our own money for it. We need our money for important stuff, like beer and cable TV. Please get money from people in other states and send it our way. P. S. We'd steal it ourselves, but they'd put us in jail. So you'll have to steal it for us. to which I would respond: I'm sorry, but the 10th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution forbids the Federal Government from doing anything not specifically authorized by the Consitution. Therefore I cannot honor your request. If you want a monument, raise the money yourselves. Well, they'd have me impeached and back on the farm and replaced with somebody "effective" quicker than you can say "entitlement".

Ted, you CYNIC you. Fancy thinking that democracy = "vote for the person who'll open the public purse the most". Next you'll be telling us that the Public Service has nothing to do with serving the public! Disgraceful! If I understood HTML enough to get the square brackets stuff working, there would be a huge grin here, but since my efforts so far have been dismal failures :-) will have to do. Russell

Ted, I meant if IBM said no that it will NOT address some of the TOP TEN things like a GUI, etc.. My loyality to IBM and their products would be gone. Boy that smiley face is going to screw this thread. Please talk to the Editor and let's figure out a way to comprise a list and communicate it to IBM in a concerted fashion.

                                3) The industry is "headed" towards platform independence? And how many years has the industry been saying that? And why hasn't anyone sighted the herd moving yet? I agree. Most organisations really dont care about platform independence, unless they are a software house. Technologies such as XML make interopability between diferent OS platforms a lesser issue. I think its the definition of platform that has shifted for many companies. Before they were an AS/400 or HP site, today they are a SAP or JDE site. Companies chose applications to solve their business problem. It would be a good magician/consultant that could convince business management to compromise on business function for an operating system.
