IBM InfoSphere BigInsights Standard Edition V2.1.1 and IBM InfoSphere BigInsights Enterprise Edition V2.1.1 allow users to pick the set of Hadoop capabilities that best fit their needs.

IBM InfoSphere BigInsights Enterprise Edition delivers enterprise Hadoop capabilities with easy-to-use analytic tools and visualization for business analysts and data scientists, rich developer tools, powerful analytic functions, complete administration and management capabilities, and the latest versions of Apache Hadoop and associated projects.

This release provides new packaging and pricing options for its IBM InfoSphere BigInsights Enterprise Editions (referred to as BigInsights).

The new IBM InfoSphere BigInsights Standard Edition V2.1.1 is in addition to IBM InfoSphere BigInsights Enterprise Edition. The Standard Edition allows you to get started with core Hadoop components, while the Enterprise Edition provides you with production-grade capabilities needed in large enterprises to manage Hadoop environments more efficiently.

You get new node-based pricing for both IBM InfoSphere BigInsights Enterprise Edition V2.1.1 (consisting of the same features and functions of V2.1) and the new IBM InfoSphere BigInsights Standard Edition V2.1.1.

BigInsights Standard Edition: This low-priced entry level software is designed for organizations that are looking to get started with the core Hadoop components. It comes with what you need to start off your Hadoop project including development tools, a management console, and cluster management tools. The BigInsights Standard Edition also comes with Big SQL and BigSheets, two key features that sets BigInsights Standard Edition apart from other Hadoop distributions.

  • Big SQL is a native SQL query engine that enables standard ANSI SQL access to data stored in Hadoop. It comes with a standards compliant Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) and Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) driver, and supports a rich SQL syntax. Big SQL allows new users to leverage their existing SQL skills and immediately apply them in a big data environment, querying data in BigInsights the same way they are querying data from their database applications. It leverages MapReduce parallelism for complex data sets and bypasses MapReduce for low latency queries (for example, sub-second HBase queries).
  • BigSheets is a web-based analysis and visualization tool with a familiar, spreadsheet-like interface that enables analysis of large amounts of data and helps to design and manage long running data collection jobs.
  • BigInsights Development Tools provide a familiar, Eclipse based development environment for building and deploying Hadoop based and big data analytics applications. It provides a set of developer tools and editors that enable fast adoption and reduced coding and debugging efforts for any Hadoop based development work.
  • BigInsights Management Console capabilities help tighten security and access control while monitoring functionality and provides the ability to control all applications from a centralized dashboard.

BigInsights Enterprise Edition: This edition comes with the enterprise features that enable all roles within an organization to collaboratively leverage Hadoop and big data. It comes with all of the BigInsights Standard Edition features plus search and data exploration capabilities. It includes limited use licenses to IBM InfoSphere Streams, IBM InfoSphere Data Explorer, and IBM Cognos® bundles, the enterprise grade General Parallel File System File Placement Optimizer (GPFS-FPO) file system option, Adaptive Map Reduce, and deep in Hadoop text analytical capabilities that enable the extraction of insights and knowledge from unstructured text stored in Hadoop. This proven technology is then leveraged by the included Machine Data Analytics and Social Data Analytics capabilities of the BigInsights Enterprise Edition.

  • Adaptive MapReduce delivers an approximate 4x* performance gain on average over open source Hadoop running jobs derived from production traces.
    • * 4x is approximate value. See the STAC Report at

  2. https://github.com/SWIMProjectUCB/SWIM
    • Testing involved the SWIM benchmark at
    • Jobs are derived from production workload traces. Testing was conducted in controlled laboratory conditions.
  • GPFS-FPO provides an optional enterprise-class distributed file system support that is Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) compliant. GPFS-FPO brings already proven big data distributed file system capabilities to the Hadoop and MapReduce environment. GPFS-FPO's distributed metadata feature eliminates any single point of failure in the file system. As you move from the sandbox to integrated rollout, your Hadoop application has to deal with files that may reside on different systems, with different operating systems, and quite possibly different applications in addition to MapReduce. With full POSIX compliance support, and the ability to work with more traditional applications requiring read/write capabilities, GPFS-FPO provides greater value that can be highly leveraged for all of your file-based analytics requirements.
  • In Hadoop analytics capabilities include sophisticated text analytics features unique to BigInsights with a vast library of extractors enabling extraction of actionable insights from large amounts of textual data.
  • BigInsights has built in Social Data Analytics functionality that provides the capability to ingest and process large volumes of social media data, yielding key insights such as customer retention, customer acquisition, lead generation, brand management, and campaign effectiveness that can be used to develop sophisticated social data analytics applications.
  • The built in Machine Data Analytics capabilities enable you to analyze various types of machine data to gain operational efficiency and to gain business insights. It provides the ability to ingest, parse, and extract various types of machine data. It can then analyze the data to generate insights such as usage, patterns, and correlations. It provides faceted search capability to easily find and navigate through large volumes of machine data. It also supports visualization of the data and the results of the analysis.
  • Enhanced enterprise integration:
    • InfoSphere Data Explorer: InfoSphere BigInsights includes a limited use license for the included InfoSphere Data Explorer program, which helps organizations to search, discover, navigate, and visualize vast amounts of structured and unstructured information across many enterprise systems and data repositories. It also provides a cost-effective and efficient entry point for exploring the value of big data technologies through a powerful framework for developing applications that leverage existing enterprise data.
    • IBM InfoSphere Streams: InfoSphere BigInsights includes a limited use license for the included InfoSphere Streams program, which enables real-time, continuous analysis of data on the fly. InfoSphere Streams is an enterprise-class stream processing system that can be used to extract actionable insights from data as it arrives in the enterprise while transforming data and ingesting it into BigInsights at high speeds.
    • IBM Cognos Business Intelligence: InfoSphere BigInsights includes a limited use license for the included Cognos Business Intelligence program, which enables business users to access and analyze the information they need to improve decision making, gain better insight, and manage performance. Cognos Business Intelligence includes software for query, reporting, analysis, and dashboards, as well as software to gather and organize information from multiple sources.

BigInsights also offers a Quick Start Edition. This is a no-charge, nonproduction downloadable version that contains the features of Enterprise Edition, along with tutorials and videos that provide education.
