Profound Logic Software, the leader in IBM i application modernization, is proud to announce that they have become one of the newest members of the Node.js Foundation. By joining the Foundation, Profound Logic emphasizes its dedication to the use of Node.js for legacy application modernization and new development.

The IBM i (also known as AS/400 or iSeries) is a very modern application platform used by thousands of businesses around the world. It offers reliability, scalability, and security, and makes it easy for businesses to adopt new technologies, like cloud and mobile.

However, many businesses on IBM i still depend on legacy applications with outdated code and interfaces. Additionally, many of these businesses are experiencing “brain drain” as their developers reach retirement age.

These businesses need a reliable and affordable way to:

  • Modernize their legacy application code and text-based interfaces
  • Develop new enterprise applications
  • Add new IBM i developers to their talent pool
  • Integrate disparate development efforts
  • Extend apps to include API, such as Watson and the Internet of Things

This is where Node.js comes in. Profound Logic is a pioneer in the use of Node for modernizing IBM i source code and application interfaces, thus avoiding other approaches that can cost millions of dollars and take decades to complete.

“Node.js is a true game-changer for businesses on IBM i,” states Alex Roytman, Profound Logic CEO. “Our Node-based Profound.js solution and agile development approach transforms legacy code into modern Node.js on an ‘as needed’ basis. This ensures that businesses avoid the risks, costs, and disruptions of ‘rip-and-replace’ approaches, such as system overhauls using Java or .NET. It also makes it easier to find new developers who are fluent in JavaScript, the most popular development language in the world, as well as extend RPG applications to include API via Node Package Manager, or NPM.”

Node.js is a JavaScript runtime environment used by startups and enterprises alike for everything from enterprise applications, robotics, API engines, cloud stacks and mobile websites. Its lightweight architecture and modularity allow it to power some of the most widely used websites like Netflix, Airbnb, Twitter, PayPal, Walmart, Yahoo! and more. Used by nearly 9 million people worldwide, the platform is a key driver in digital transformation and is quickly becoming the de facto platform for serverless, microservice-based and containerized workloads.

As a Node.js Foundation Member, Profound Logic will collaborate with other members and play an important role in the promotion and acceleration of Node development.

“Our members’ support is incredibly important to the Foundation’s work to provide infrastructure, develop certifications and to conduct collaborative and learning events to meet the demands of new developers coming into the project and enterprise users,” said Mark Hinkle, Executive Director of The Node.js Foundation. “We are excited to welcome Profound Logic into our community and greatly appreciate their commitment to the stability, security, and growth of the Node.js platform.”
